AHF Presents Spirit Tastings @ The Century Room
As part of our continuing education program, Festival Programming Director Francisco Terrazas will host a monthly agave spirits tasting in coordination with our friends at The Century Room! Join us on the first Sunday of every month for an evening around the culture, craft, and process of agave spirits. This month’s tasting will feature four spirits from around Northern Mexico.
($40 per guest | 4 pm Doors / 4:30 pm Tasting)
Ticket includes four ¾ ounce tastes and traditional tasting accompaniments (orange slices, agave worm salt and sparkling water!)

Agave Expo
Engage all things agave in this pop-up bazaar at the Hotel Congress! Visit local vendors and nurseries while enjoying live music and entertainment for agave spirit tastings and an agave plant you can take home. There will also be Arizona Sonora Desert Museum presentations and a book signing by Chasing Centuries author Ron Parker. Attend expert-led talks given by artists, historians, ethnobotanists, and makers. Enjoy refreshing treats and live music as you explore the world of agave!
Agave: A Spirit Without Borders
Join us around the politics and practice of agave cultivation and distillation from a commercial and domestic approach, while exploring the benefits and challenges of the industry in the emerging US agave industry. Enjoy spirit samplings along with hors d'oeuvres featuring local heritage ingredients crafted by Maynards Market & Kitchen Executive Chef Brian Smith.
Howard Scott Gentry Memorial Lecture
Join us as we honor Dr. Tony Burgess his lifetime contributions to agave science! Dr. Burgess will give his Howard Scott Gentry Memorial lecture, “Thinking like an agave, reckoning with global change.”
Bacanora: Spirit of the Sonoran Desert, Part II

The Art & Sciences of Agave
This three-hour class is a behind the scenes tour of Tumamoc Hill that will cover and build upon basic drawing concepts and techniques and provide a detailed presentation of the importance of agave in desert cultures and recent scientific breakthroughs.
On the Wings of Sustainability: A Pollinator Summit & Brunch
Find new inspiration to create change at this event with presentations on pollinators, a honey tasting experience with Miraval’s Noel Patterson, and an exquisite farm-to-table brunch created by Chef Elizabeth Johnson featuring produce sourced from Aravaipa Farms and local purveyor Pivot Produce.

Firing the Agave Roasting Pit
Witness preparations of this ancestral, labor intensive practice of using an underground, rock-lined oven for agave plant fire roasting, learning about agave roasting heritage and uses for the plant after roasting.
Panel Discussion: Cultural Appropriation or Appreciation?
Listen to different opinions about how to share traditional knowledge respectfully. Light refreshments will be served.
Agave University: An Immersive Exploration of All Things Agave
Agave is not just for drinking and bad choices! Dive deep into the natural and cultural history of the agave plant family in this 3-hour Cultural Immersion Experience. Learn about the botany, genetic diversity, conservation, and traditional knowledge associated with sustainable use of wild agave for mescal production in Mexico, how the Hohokam of southern Arizona cultivated agave for food and other uses a thousand years ago, and how efforts to save the lesser long-nosed bat are tied to commercial tequila production. This interactive class led by several experts concludes with tastings to introduce you to the wide world of agave spirits, including lesser-known alternatives to tequila. This class will also be a preview of the upcoming Agave Heritage Festival celebrating the cultural, commercial, and culinary significance of agave in the border region.
