Through this panel, we want to share the experiences and reflections of the first field visits of the first generation of the Agavero Fund of Mexico in Oaxaca in February 2024. These visits, in addition to the previous community work of the participants of the Agavero Fund, led us to question the current context of the environmental crisis experienced in the communities producing Agave and Sotol distillates throughout Mexico. This crisis is not going unnoticed and that is why inhabitants of these agave, sotolero and mezcalero territories, as well as producers and teams on the ground throughout Mexico, are more willing to take action and carry out initiatives that link traditional and scientific knowledge to create autonomous models towards a more ecologically responsible production, and in favor of the preservation of the Mexican biocultural heritage associated with Agave, Sotol and their distillates.
Join Diana Pinzon of Zinacantan, Andres Cruz of Mezcal Vago, and Miguel Angel Partida of Chocalo, as they share their experience forming a collaborative organization based in creating a sustainable future for agave spirits.
