Tumamoc Hill Agave Walking Tour

  • Tumamoc Hill 1675 West Anklam Road Tucson, AZ, 85745 United States (map)

$30

Join archaeologists Suzy and Paul Fish and additional guest speakers for a walking tour of the Hohokam agave fields on the western slopes of Tumamoc Hill. We will visit the rockpile mulches, terraces, check dams, and other cobble devices that captured storm runoff for Hohokam farmers’ agave crops. You will hear about modern experimental agave plantings in the fields and the latest research to identify the kinds of agaves the Hohokam cultivated for food and fiber, among many other uses.

  • Meet at the shrine at the base of Tumamoc Hill at 8:45 am.

  • Park along Anklam Rd. Do not park in the St. Mary’s Hospital parking lot or in the parking lots of the medical offices along the north side of Anklam Rd.

  • Wear sturdy shoes for a half-mile walk through prickly desert vegetation and gentle slopes with loose rocks. A hat, sunscreen, and long pants are strongly recommended. Please plan to carry your own water and be prepared to be outside for about three hours on a warm day.

  • A limited number of heavily discounted tickets are available for students and Native American participants. Please email desertlaboratory@gmail.com to inquire about discounts.
