Viva Mezcal is a documentary about the importance of traditional mezcals in Mexico. Interviews with biologists, agronomists, maestros mezcaleros, researchers, distributors, bartenders and experts on the subject give a perspective of the current situation and the possible future of the mezcal industry.
This documentary seeks to protect the tradition of mezcal and raise its awareness by showing the work that it represents for thousands of families in the fields, and exploring ways to commercialize it fairly.
Pedro Jiménez Gurría is a promoter of mezcal and mezcal culture; he has worked in the dissemination and preservation of the culture of agave spirits for years. Pedro is the founder of Mezonte, a non-profit that promotes, supports and preserves—through various media—the production and practices of traditional agave spirits. Pedro also owns the mezcal bar Pare de Sufrir, located in Guadalajara, Jalisco which features mezcals from all over Mexico, with an emphasis on Jalisco and Michoacán.
Pedro is also a visual artist. His work reflects a nostalgic and reflexive inner state that is represented with poetic images that speak of rituals as a way of representing human existence. His work has been exhibited in different festivals around the world including Korea, Germany, France, United States, Canada, Peru, Chile, UK, Spain and Mexico.
